New Start

Documentary

'A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record. "Documentary" has been described as a "filmmaking practice, a cinematic tradition, and mode of audience reception" that is continually evolving and is without clear boundaries.'

' A documentary film tells a story about real life, which claims to truthfulness. How to do that honestly, in good faith, is a never ending discussion, with many answers. Documentary is defined and redefined over the course of time, both by makers and by viewers. Viewers certainly shape the meaning of any documentary, by combing our own knowledge of and interest in the world with how filmmaker shows it to us. Audience expectations are also built on a prior experience viewers expect not to be tricked and lied to. We expect to be told things about the real world, things that are true.'

During this module we will be making a documentary in a foreign city. We have to find an article in a local paper about something that is happening in the city and then we will have to pitch two ideas to our tutors and they will give us feedback and help us lean towards one of the ideas. We have to make our idea well structured and prepare as much as we can. The thing that found myself thinking when researching this genre is that there is so much you can plan. You mainly wait for the interviewees and the nature to say and do what you want them to do. And you sometimes will have to shape the film in the post production as not everything goes the way you thought it would.
